Description

Montacute House was built c1590-1600 for Sir Edward Phelips and remained the ancestral seat of the Phelips family until 1911. The house was then leased to a number of tenants including Lord Curzon before being put up for sale in 1929. It was purchased by Ernest Cook in 1931, on behalf of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and was then presented to the National Trust.

This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-2012 Red Box Project.
