The artist of the drawing is unknown but the lower right corner of the image is signed C.A.C.
St Martin's Church is thought to have been built around the 15th century but by the 19th century it had fallen into disrepair. Around the middle of the century a decision was made to build a new church just to the west of the original, leaving the old structure as a picturesque ruin. At the start of the 20th century, however, the decision was made to demolish the new Christ Church and rebuild the original St Martin's. Work was started in 1911 and the church was re-dedicated in 1914.
This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-2012 Red Box Project.
