Description

The inscription reads: 'Here two young Danish Souldiers lye, The one in quarrell chanc'd to die; The others Head, by their own Law, With Sword was severed at on Blow. December the 23rd 1689'.

According to 'Olde Yorkshire Punishments' by Howard Peach, the name of the soldier beheaded for killing his comrade in a duel was Johannes Frederick Bellow and both men were part of a company formed by William of Orange to fight in Ireland.

On the back of the postcard, the price of postage is given as 1d. Postal rates increased from 1/2d to 1d on 3rd of June 1918. A year later the price was raised again, to 1 1/2d, but due to protests, it was lower again on 29th May 1922. This postcard, therefore, dates from either 1918-1919 or after May 1922.
