St Mary's Church, as it appears in this photograph, was built between 1858 and 1861 by J L Pearson for Lord Hotham and replaced the existing dilapidated brick and stone structure.
The entire church is built in the Geometric style and consists of a three-stage tower with spire, nave, south porch, north and south transepts, chancel, north and south chapels and north vestry.
