Description

The timber-framed building known as Shakespeare's Birthplace is a late 15th and late 16th century town house on the north-east side of Henley Street.

It was owned by Willam Shakespeare's father, John, from c1551 to 1601. From then until the end of the 18th century, the house was owned by the Hart family who were descendants of Shakepeare's sister. By the 1740s the house had already become a tourist attraction and it was bought by the Shakespeare Birthplace Committee in 1847. In 1858 extensive restorations were carried out to the house, based on a drawing of 1769.
