Description

The only surviving one of the original medieval town gates in Sandwich. The lower section dates to the 1380s and the upper section to the 1570s. It is in the form of a gateway with a three storeyed building above.

The publican is named on the front of The Ship as John Shaxby. He is listed in the 1851 census at that residence but not in later census records, indicating that the photograph was taken in the mid 19th century. By 1871 The Ship was run by Charles Coleman. It closed in 1970 and was converted into a private residence.

This print is mounted on a page alongside OP31026 and OP10858.
