Description

Built in 1766, to the design of John Crunden, the building originally stood in Castle Square, around a mile away from its present location, and was the ballroom of the Castle Tavern. It was converted into the chapel of the Royal Pavilion in 1822 and then, once it had been demolished and rebuilt, into St Stephen's Church in 1851. Additions and alterations were made in the second half of the 19th century but the church was closed in 1939. Later it became an 'Institute for the Deaf and Dumb' and, since 1988, it has been a centre for homeless people.
