Description

The photograph is entitled 'Market Day: The cattle market at Lewes'.

On the back of the print is the handwritten note 'Given 1945'.

The cattle market was held on the site of a former tannery from 1883 until 1992, having been moved from the High Street due to concerns over hygene and safety. After closing, the site was redeveloped and is now Tanner Brook.

Archival History

This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-2012 Red Box Project.

The photograph was accessioned by the National Monuments Record on 11th August 1967.
