Description

Leighton House was designed by George Aitchison for Frederic Leighton. Work began on the building in 1866, and it was extended and altered several times before 1896. One of these extensions was the 'Arab Hall', constructed in 1877-79 to house Leighton's collection of Middle Eastern tiles across two storeys. The design was "based on the palace of La Zisa in Palermo" and the interior features 14th century tiles in the alcove on the west wall, and 17th century tiles elsewhere, as well as work by Victorian artists.
