Description

Until 1930 the Abbey Mill had been equipped with four traditional wooden sluice gates to regulate the 'Mill Avon' in times of flooding. By this time they were considered inadequate for the job and in 1930 the large guillotine flood gate seen here immediately to the left of the mill, replaced the old sluices. In 1935 a larger, radial sluice was fitted in addition to the 1930 gate. The new gate's massive concrete counterweights can be seen to the left in the photograph.
