Description

The Cross House, at 107 Church Street, appears in the distance with numbers 1-9 High Street running from left to right across the photograph, ending with a glimpse of the Swan Hotel on the right. The photograph includes numbers 3 and 4 which were demolished in 1934 to provide a site for the town's Woolworths store. Number 4 is the low frontage with a set back gable and number 3 is the double jettied building beyond. Prominent on the right is 9 High Street, also known as Golden Key House and the Nodding Gables. The building dates from the 16th century and is considered to be one of the finest town houses of the period in the country. It was at one time the Old Coach Office. One of the major coaching houses, The Swan is just visible to its the right.
