Description

Seen here in its last years as 'Academy House' a private residence, the building became a hotel in 1926. It has a main block of timber frame construction dating from the mid 16th century, with early 17th century wings. Alterations in the 18th century gave it a brick facade and in the late 19th century it was refronted once again, this time with applied 'timber framing'. As such it is good example of the changing fashion for different building materials and architectural treatments. The house is Grade II* Listed and its garden wall and gates are separately Grade II Listed.
