Description

The Banqueting House was built c1619-25 by Inigo Jones and was refaced in the 19th century by Sir John Soane. In 1893 Queen Victoria granted it to the Royal United Services Institute and it was used as a museum until 1962. The ceiling in the main hall is the last surviving example of an in-situ ceiling painting by Peter Paul Reubens and was installed in the hall in 1636. It depicts The Union of the Crowns, The Apotheosis of James I and the Peaceful Reign of James I.

The back of the photographic mount for this image indicates that this print is one of five in a series showing the Reubens' ceiling.
