Description

The Florence Institute for Boys (known colloquially as The Florrie) was opened in 1889. The building was funded by Sir Bernard Hall, a merchant and former Mayor of Liverpool, in memory of his late daughter Florence. It housed a library, teaching rooms, penny savings bank, and gymnasium; boxing, cricket and football were popular. It closed in 1988 and in the early 21st century the building was restored following fundraising and a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. It reopened as a community centre in 2012. The building is Grade II Listed. This photograph was published on page 152 of 'Played in Liverpool' by Ray Physick.
