Description

The Gordon Working Lads Institute was designed by David Walker of Liverpool, and was built by Morrison & Sons of Wavertree. The building was funded by William Cliff, merchant, in memory of his son William Frater Cliff, and is named for Major General Charles Gordon RE who undertook extensive charitable work in Gravesend. The institute opened in December 1886 and is thought to be Britain's oldest surviving purpose-built Boys' Club. It closed in 1995 but was revived by a local action group in 2000, with extensive internal renovation funded by the European Regional Development Fund. This photograph was published on page 149 of 'Played in Liverpool' by Ray Physick.
