When the Beechcroft Reservoir was completed in 1909 it was the largest underground reservoir in Europe. Initially football and hockey pitches were laid out on the reservoir's roof. The Aquarius Golf Club was formed in 1912 for staff of the Metropolitan Water Board (MWB). Sports facilities were also offered at other MWB covered reservoirs, including East Finchley (Aquarius Archery Club) and Hampton (Aquarius Sailing Club).
