The horseracing scene on the pub sign of the Kersal Hotel, formerly the Turf Tavern, refers to the Kersal Moor Racecourse which was located opposite the building. The site is believed to have been used as a racecourse as early as the 17th century. It was permanently closed in the mid 19th century. This photograph was published on page 34 of 'Played in Manchester' by Simon Inglis.
