The site on Endell Street has been home to the Bloomsbury Baths and Washhouses (1852) and later Holborn Baths (1902). Work on a new pool began in 1937 but was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War. The half-completed pool was used as a water tank during the war. It was opened as an open-air swimming pool in June 1946, and an indoor pool was built alongside it in 1960. This photograph was published on page 173 of 'Liquid Assets: The lidos and open air swimming pools of Britain' by Janet Smith.
