The building dates from the late 15th century, being remodelled and extended in the late 18th century when it became important as one of the Tewkesbury's main coaching inns. At the time of the photograph the hotel's decorated entrance canopyhad been temporarily removed. The awning erected in its place to keep guests dry carries the wording "At the Hop Pole they stopped to dine" on its front edge. This is a quote from Charles Dickens' book 'The Pickwick Papers', in which the Hop Pole at Tewkesbury is specifically mentioned.
