Description

The image has been taken from inside the nave of the Abbey Church, and shows the 'Watching Loft' on the right side of the image. The box has a squared corbel and moulded cornice, and small viewing openings on three of the sides. At the eastern end of the nave is a large cross suspended over drapery. The uppermost round-headed arches of the nave have chevron patterns with an arcade of four smaller columns inside, whilst those underneath are slightly pointed, separating the nave from aisles. The Abbey Church was originally Benedictine, and founded c.637, although no work pre-12th century survives.
