Description

The administration block in the image was part of the workhouse, or Yeovil Union Public Assistance Institution, and fronts onto Preston Road. It is now the front of Summerlands Hospital and is the only part of the hexagonal-shaped site of the workhouse to survive. Of the eleven-bay facade, the central three bays are the focus, with two bays to the left and one to the right visible. The central bays are topped with a pediment which have the date '1837'. Since the photograph was taken, alterations to the site have been made, especially to the rear elevation, which is not seen, as well as the addition of the date '1968' to the pediment, underneath the original date. In the foreground is a drive or wide path and some foliage that has been planted to the left.
