Description

The stature of Ariadne is in the main chamber of the Grotto, which has two exits or entrances opposite one another, and a portal overlooking the lake, which is opposite Ariadne. The statue reclines over a spring, where the words 'Nymph of the Grot these sacred springs I keep...' are engraved in stone on the edge of the pool. This is a translation by Pope and was replicated in 1967. The ground of the cave is a concentric pattern of cobbles and the room is a domed chamber. The entrance was added in 1776 and was built circa 1748 for Henry Hoare bu William Privet of Chilmark.
