Description

Syon House was originally built on the remains of a Brigittin Abbey nunnery, and was extensively remodelled between 1765-67 by Robert Adam, creating the hollow-square layout of todays house. There is a formal garden in the interior courtyard in the centre of the house. The image focuses on the river front of the house, which faces east, towards the River Thames, and was taken south-east of the house. The house is three storeys and has a thirteen-window range on the east front, including three protruding bays; one in the centre, and two at the ends of the house. The ground floor of the river front has an arcade of eleven round-headed archways, which seem to be set away from the front of the house. Above the central bay is a gable with open arch and a statue of Percy Lion, which was erected on the house in 1874 after being transferred from Old Northumberland House in Charing Cross. There is a slight view of the south front, which has a pair of steps that lead to an entrance next to the protruding end bays.
