Description

The image show the central and eastern side of the southern elevation, which has 25 bays with a four-bay projection at either end. It has four storeys, with large windows with stone dressings and carved keystones on the ground floor, large rectangular windows with horizontal hoods on the first floor, circular windows on the second, and small square windows with stone surround on the attic floor. The central bay has a three window range, with stone pilasters rising to the top of the ground floor, supporting Corinthian columns that span the first and second floors and support a large frieze. Above the frieze are carved pilasters between the attic windows. On the first floor the outer two windows are topped with pediments, while the central window has a stone carving above it. Above some of the first floor windows across the front are small pediments and garlands. In front of the palace are metal railings and a terrace three steps higher than the rest of the garden. At the top of the steps in the centre of the terrace is a stone sundial, by Thomas Tompion, and on either side of the steps are lead vases, which possibly date to around 1700. Two of the ten vases are seen in the image.
