Description

The statue is possibly from a choir screen, which dates to 1731, along with its pair, a statue of St John of Beverley. It shows the king standing with his right leg forward, and holding a slim sword over his shoulder with his right hand, and a scroll in his left, which is slightly extended out. King Athelstan is a figure of importance in this church, as he refounded it as a collegiate church in 935 after the prior church had been destroyed.
