Description

St Mary and St Cuthbert's church dates to 1814, and was formerly a Bethel Congregational Church, now a United Reform Church remodelled in 1860. It has an aisled nave with west tower, south porch and chancel. The image shows a partial view of a row of fourteen effigies, named either the Lumley Family or Lumley tombs, believed to represent the family of Lord John Lumley. It is suggested that some of the effigies were resited, and that only an handful are genuine representations of the family. Some of the effigies have had their feet removed to create space. All are situated along the north aisle wall of the church.
