The iron works moved to Consett in 1840 when the Derwent Iron Company moved to the district, and became the Consett Iron Company btween 1858 and 1861, after the Derwent and Consett Iron Company was put up for sale. After over 100 years of renovating the company and employing around 6,000 people in the area, the company was closed in 1980, and demolished in 1981.
