Description

This community arts centre is based in the former Great George Street Congregational Chapel on the corner of Great George Street and Nelson Street. In the 1960s the chapel was nicknamed 'The Blackie' or 'Black Church' due to the effects of over a hundred years of pollution and grime on the exterior stonework. The church closed in 1967 after which the building was converted into a contempary arts centre and community centre. It remains as such, and is now known as 'The Black-E'.
