Description

The series contains a photograph album and a set of loose prints compiled by Knicky Chapman, documenting her time in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force during the Second World War. Approximately half of the images show women undertaking training at the Royal Air Force's No. 2 School of Photography in Blackpool, including a class photograph of each intake of WAAFs, and a set of images taken to document the training school, which were presented to Squadron Leader W H Dunton, the officer in charge of the training school. The second part of the album, and the loose prints, show Knicky Chapman at Pinewood Studios, where she was posted following her training in Blackpool. Pinewood Studios was used as a base for the RAF's Film Production Unit during the Second World War, as well as for the Crown Film Unit and the Army Film and Photographic Unit. The RAF FPU was charged with documenting the RAF's involvement in the war, alongside producing material advocating the role of the RAF in the war, to increase morale and to gain international support for the Allied Forces. During her time serving with the RAF FPU, Knicky Chapman worked in the Stills Department at Pinewood, and the photographs she collected give an insight into her time at the studios.
