Description

Sixteen negatives of statues in the grounds of Revesby Abbey, taken by John Harris in 1959. Shortly after this date the statues disappeared, and it is not known what happened to them. Harris suggests they may have been stolen, the Nikolaus Pevsner guide to Lincolnshire states that they were 'dispersed'. Enquiries with the estate office (January 2010) suggest that they were sold by a Derbyshire scrap dealer by the name of Johnson. The provenance of the statues is also unknown. Research within the NMR and online has produced no information. The Pevsner guide suggests they were of 18th century German origin, while Harris suggests the Italian sculptor Pietro Francavilla. Further research is required to establish provenance, but it would seem that these negatives are the only known record of these statues.
