Description

A series of fifty-one photographs showing Marks and Spencer stores in England, Scotland and Wales (thirty-nine 55mm slides, four 35mm slides and seven uncatalogued digital photographs). The majority of the stores are shown while occupied by Marks and Spencer, except for Clapham High Street (McDonald's).

Many of the stores are designed in a Classical Revival or Art Deco style. Several show the modular system developed by Robert Lutyens, which enabled extensions to be seamless. Highlights also include the granite facades of the stores at Briggate, Leeds and The Pantheon, Oxford Street, London.

Infrequently, Burton and Woolworth's stores are also shown alongside the Marks and Spencer premises as parts of street scenes.
