A series of 373 photographs of branches of Montague Burton, known as Burton or Burton Menswear, in England, Wales, Scotland, Jersey and the Isle of Man. The majority of the stores shown in this series were built in the late 1920s and 1930s.
The photographs show good examples of Burton's 'house style' of architecture, including features which appeared on the facades of many Burton stores: the 'chain of merit' transom lights, triple upper floor windows, stylised elephant heads, geometric designs, and imposing pilasters.
Also photographed is an example of a 'coffin' door, tiling and mosaic designs, and several decorative ventilation grilles.
Building materials include stone and brick, with several faience and dark granite facades such as Kingston-upon-Hull and Reading.
