When the Ordnance Survey transferred the Archaeology Division to the RCHME in 1983, a considerable quantity of records was also transferred, including a set of 76 large portfolios containing archive material. The collection, compiled over a period of some sixty years, reflects the history of archaeology on the Ordnance Survey maps and the interests of the Ordnance Survey Archaeology officers, particularly in topographical maps. It contains both originals and copies, including the following categories of material: maps, distribution map, sketch maps, plans, excavation plans and sections, reconstruction drawings, topographical surveys, photographs, engraving, cuttings, correspondence and pamphlets.
The process of copying archive for the portfolios was initiated by O G S Crawford c.1922. One of his main aims was to photograph large scale (cadastral) manuscript plans of private estates. The prints produced were mounted and kept in large portfolios. Unfortunately, all but two of the portfolios compiled by Crawford were destroyed in the Blitz, as were the negatives.
The Blitz did not mark the end of the portfolio collection. Material was added by staff of the Archaeology Division after the war and, as in Crawford's case, reflected the interests of the Archaeology officers.
Since transfer to the RCHME the system of portfolios has been replaced by a simple sequential scheme based on the AO numbers originally given to the contents of the portfolios. The exception to this is a series of items grouped together and mounted on single boards but with non-sequential AO item numbers. These are filed together in two drawers in more or less numerical order.
An RCHME index list of folios also contains an introduction to the series.
