Description

This series contains over 100,000 negatives taken by a succession of UK Govenment ministries and departments responsible for the care and conservation of historic buildings, public construction projects, and maintenance of the UK Govenrnment's estate. These were the Ministry of Works (1943-1962), Ministry of Public Buildings and Works (1962-1970), and the Department of the Environment (1970-1997) and its Property Services Agency (1972-1993).

The series is divided into subjects with negatives and each subject is allocated a letter prefix. The subjects and their letter codes appear to be: ancient monuments (A); threatened building (B); ceremonies (C); diplomatic and embassies (D); exhibitions (E); floodlighting (F); general (G); housing (H); construction (J); utilities (M); personnel (P); parks (R); supplies (S); transport (T); models & plans (Y); and miscellaneous including social and accidents (Z).

The 'G' subject negatives are the largest category and was catalogued in the 1990s.

The 'A' subject negatives is the second largest category and contains most of the images in this series of ancient monuments that are now or have been English Heritage properties. Photographs produced from these negatives are available in the Blue Albums and Blue Folders (OWS01/01).

Archival History

The series was transferred to The English Heritage Archive in 1999 from the English Heritage Photographic Library.
