The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England published a volume in 1952 entitled 'An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in Dorset, Volume I, West'. This volume covered the western part of the county, particularly Cerne Abbas, Lyme Regis and Sherborne.

This set of material comprises handwritten notes with accompanying sketches and photographs, small and large format negatives, measured drawings, and correspondence and that were created by the RCHME in the course of their investigations, and form an extensive resource for the study of historic buildings and monuments in the area. The archive also includes material created for a proposed revision to the volume, which was never published.
