Sub Series: Building Survey and Non-Official Buildings
- Date:
- 1955 - 1976
- Reference:
- PSA01/04/B
- Type:
- Sub Series containing Photographic material
The series contains circa 5000 black and white negatives showing historic buildings, mainly domestic, in England and Wales.
The purpose or function of the series is unknown but the negatives appear to have been taken by Ministry of Works architectural investigators. The buildings depicted are not ancient monuments or properties in care but probably historic buildings at risk from collapse, demolition or comprehensive modification which the Ministry was keen to record or asked to advise on. As well of general exterior views of civic and domestic Coverage usually ranges from 1 to 6 negs per site [but can be as high as 21] some showing interior details [staircases, chimneypieces]. Includes wales. This seems to be a systematic record of architecturally significant structures from manor houses & small fortified houses to country houses, incl follies, gazebos, stables, outbuildings, architectural details. Also almshouses, town halls etc. Nearly all are rural and whilst a few are in the course of being repaired it is clear that many were threatened, derelict & subsequently demolished [see: 367 - lee hall, gateacre, liverpool].
This is part of the Series: PSA01/04 Negatives; within the Collection: PSA01 Property Services Agency
