Description

This series comprises 17 post-bound photograph albums and one scrapbook relating to archaeology and historic buildings compiled by the Ancient Monuments Inspectorate of the Ministry of Works between about 1950 and 1970. They were once part of a larger series of albums from which prints were taken and stored in the Historic England Archive's Archaeology Red Box Collection as part of the NAR Photograph Cataloguing Project. These prints are catalogued under series HBM02/01 and the original albums housing them have been disposed of. The surviving albums in this series may contain prints that duplicate those in the Archaeology Red Box Collection but some are certainly unique - the prints in PSA01/10/018 for instance.

A letter found among the albums addressed to J.G. Hurst in 1962 suggests that staff working on excavations sent in prints to be added to the albums. The album containing newspaper cuttings was probably used as a scrapbook by the Inspectorate to collect references to historic building restoration and access. The albums have not yet been catalogued to album level. The series contains:
