The survey was requested by Peter Kendall, Inspector of Ancient Monuments South-eastern Region, as a precursor to management works at the site. The survey involved a full topographic survey at 1:500 scale, supplemented with selective photography and research carried out at the Public Record Office, The National Maritime Museum, The Royal Engineers Library, The British Library and Cambridge University Library.
