Description

Stonehenge was given to the nation by Sir Cecil Chubb in 1918, under the care of the Ministry of Works (MoW). In May 1919, the MoW undertook a Condition Survey of the site and recorded the positions of stones within the henge at that time. These measured drawings show the dimensions of stones 1-2, 4, 6-7, 11, 21, 27-30 and 52-53. Between 1919 and 1926 the Ministry of Works undertook excavations at Stonehenge to allow repairs and stabilising measures on the stones. Leading these excavations was Lieutenant-Colonel William Hawley.
