Description

In late March and early April 2006 staff from English Heritage's Archaeological Survey and Investigation team (Cambridge Office) carried out an archaeological survey and analysis of the formal garden remains (SK 31 NE 77) associated with Ashby-de-la-Zouch castle (SK 31 NE 3). The garden is known as the "Wilderness" and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (17121). The survey was part of a multi-disciplinary project also involving geophysical survey, excavation and in-depth documentary research. The project, funded by the Wolfson Foundation, was aimed at developing a better understanding of the archaeology and history of the garden in order to improve the interpretation of this part of the castle grounds.

The investigation involved a full topographical survey of the south side of the castle grounds at 1:500 scale, including the two ruined garden towers located within the grounds. A full report will be available through the public archive of English Heritage based at the NMRC in Swindon. (1)
