Description
The Burghal Hidage town of Lydford has been surveyed, with the object of recording all earthworks visible and accessible. Both castles, the pre-conquest defences and various other features of the burgh have been recorded, together with some extra-mural elements. The plan will serve as an aid to future conservation and research decisions, which may affect Lydford. The RCHME/EH survey was carried out in three phases. In 1996 the survey included both castles and was undertaken at the request of the National Trust. The second phase was undertaken early in 2000, to assist with the decision on the application for the installation of a play park to the west of Nicholl's Hall. In June 2000 the earthwork plan for the entire enclosed area of the village was completed. The survey was undertaken pre and post merger of the RCHME with EH Contents : 1 report
