Description

'Mayer's Asylum' was founded with a bequeath in the 1811 will of Mrs Judith Mayer of Wisbech, who intended for the money to provide an 'asylum', or 'hospital for the infirm'. However, instead of this original plan, an almshouse for five inhabitants was built in 1815. 'Mayer's Asylum Fund' was still in existence in the 21st century as part of the Wisbech Charities, an amalgamation of charities which operated in the town in 1965.
