Hartismere Union Workhouse was built in the late 18th century. It was altered by William Mason between 1835 and 1840, following the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act. It consisted of a long main block, with two excercise yards to the rear, the ancillary buildings were to the northwest. The workhouse has been demolished and the site is now occupied by a late 1980s housing estate.
