Description

The hospital opened in 1848 as the 'Somerset and Bath Pauper Lunatic Asylum', and was later known as the 'Somerset and Bath Asylum'. By around 1930 it was called 'Wells Mental Hospital' or 'Somerset and Bath Mental Hospital'. By 1969 the hospital had been renamed as Mendip Hospital. It closed in 1991.
