The hospital opened as the 'Portsmouth Borough Asylum', or 'Portsmouth Borough Lunatic Asylum', in 1879. In around 1914 it became the 'City of Portsmouth Mental Hospital', or 'Portsmouth Mental Hospital'. When it joined the NHS in 1948 the hospital was renamed St James' Hospital. A period of decline began in the 1980s as inpatient services were reduced. The hospital closed in the 21st century and in 2019 the site was sold for redevelopment.
