The ‘East Riding Lunatic Asylum’, or ‘East Riding County Asylum’, was opened in 1871 on the site of Broadgate Farm. It was later known as the ‘East Riding Mental Hospital’ before being renamed as Broadgate Hospital when it joined the NHS in 1948. The hospital closed in 1989. The buildings were demolished and the site was redeveloped as housing.
