Description

‘Durham County Lunatic Asylum’ opened in 1858. It was extended in 1875-1880 with the construction of a new annexe to the south-west of the main hospital building. The hospital was renamed ‘Durham County Mental Hospital’ in 1925. From 1949 it was named Winterton Hospital’, and sometimes ‘Winterton Mental Hospital’. The hospital closed in 1996 and the buildings were later demolished.
