Description

The Hull and East Riding Refuge opened in 1839. Following the ‘Lunacy Act’ of 1845, the Refuge was purchased by the Kingston upon Hull Corporation in order to fulfil their obligation of providing a ‘Borough Asylum’. The hospital closed in 1849 and immediately reopened as the ‘Hull Borough Lunatic Asylum’, or ‘Hull Borough Asylum’. It was closed in 1888. The site was redeveloped for housing, and was replaced by Londesborough, Kimberley and Wyndham Streets.
