Description

A file of material created by the English Heritage Scientific Dating Team pertaining to the World Heritage Site of Avebury Stone Circle. The file is extensive and contains correspondence, notes, radiocarbon dating sample details, environmental sample details, photographs, sketches and radiocarbon dating certificates. The file details samples taken from the ditch fill of the Stone Circle itself and the adjoining earthwork on West Kennet Avenue, including deer antler picks, charcoal, pig bone and carbonised wood. The four black and white photographs in the file are scale images of the antlers submitted for sampling. The radiocarbon dating occurred to establish the phasing of construction of the Megalithic Monument.
