Description

A file containing 11 photographs depicting the F W Woolworth and Co store at Cornmarket, Oxford. Known as Woolworths store number 189, this was the one-hundred and eighty ninth branch of Woolworths to open in the British Isles. The store opened in May 1925 at 8 Cornmarket. It proved extremely popular and so began the hunt for larger premises. In 1930 the company purchased the Clarendon Hotel at 52-53 Cornmarket as the site for its new store. After decades of wrangling with the planning authorities, the brand new larger store finally opened in 1957. Just 26 years later, in 1983, it closed.
